Traveling Safely: What Protections and Insurance for Airbnb Users?

Airbnb has integrated a protection system specific to the platform, called AirCover for travelers, which covers a specific range of problematic situations related to the booked accommodation. This mechanism is not travel insurance in the traditional sense:…

Airbnb integrates a protection mechanism specific to the platform, called AirCover for travelers, which covers a precise range of problematic situations related to the booked accommodation. This mechanism is not a traditional travel insurance: it does not cover medical expenses, lost luggage, or cancellations for personal reasons. Understanding this distinction allows travelers to assess the actual protections available to them and identify uncovered areas that require additional coverage.

European Regulation 2024/1028 and Traceability of Airbnb Listings

Since May 20, 2026, the Regulation (EU) 2024/1028 requires short-term rental platforms, including Airbnb, to verify an official registration number for each listing published in the European Union. Platforms must also transmit stay data (nights booked, listing activity) to national authorities via dedicated digital entry points.

For a traveler, this obligation creates a layer of indirect protection. Authorities can more easily detect illegal rentals, and platforms are required to remove non-compliant listings upon request. Stays booked through Airbnb thus become more traceable and regulated, reducing the risk of booking accommodation that is completely off the radar.

If a property is found to be unregistered or illegal and the stay cannot take place for this reason, the traveler generally retains the right to a refund. This point remains to be verified according to the applicable national legislation, but the European framework clearly strengthens the position of occasional renters. A detailed guide on protection and insurance for Airbnb travelers helps clarify the relationship between these regulatory guarantees and the platform-specific mechanisms.

AirCover for Travelers: Actual Scope of Airbnb Protection

AirCover for travelers applies in four specific situations:

  • The host cancels the reservation before the traveler’s arrival, triggering relocation assistance or a refund.
  • The traveler is unable to access the accommodation upon arrival (missing key, incorrect code, unreachable host).
  • The accommodation does not significantly match the listing (missing amenities, serious hygiene issues, different number of rooms) and the host does not offer a solution.
  • The traveler does not feel safe in the booked accommodation (lock issue, dangerous environment).

In these cases, Airbnb offers either relocation to similar accommodation based on availability, or a full or partial refund. The traveler must report the issue within the first few hours of discovery, via the platform’s resolution center.

AirCover does not cover minor inconveniences (decor that differs from the photos, neighborhood noise, slow Wi-Fi). The distinction between a serious problem and a minor inconvenience is at Airbnb’s discretion, which can lead to disputes. Documenting the issue with timestamped photos upon arrival significantly strengthens the traveler’s position in case of a claim.

Supplementary Travel Insurance: What AirCover Does Not Cover

AirCover is limited to issues related to the accommodation itself. All personal aspects of travel remain outside its scope. A traditional travel insurance covers risks that AirCover ignores: medical expenses abroad, medical evacuation, loss or delay of luggage, cancellation due to illness or family events.

Airbnb has recently offered optional travel insurance, purchased at the time of booking. This offer covers emergency situations or delays affecting travel plans, delayed, damaged, or lost luggage, and medical expenses in case of illness or injury during the stay.

Connecting AirCover and Travel Insurance

The two mechanisms do not replace each other. AirCover addresses accommodation issues, while travel insurance addresses personal matters. A traveler booking an Airbnb abroad without supplementary insurance exposes themselves to potentially very high medical expenses, which neither the platform nor AirCover will cover.

Before purchasing, checking if the credit card used for the reservation already includes travel insurance (often the case with premium cards) can help avoid unnecessary double coverage. The credit card insurance sometimes excludes rentals between individuals, making it necessary to verify the general conditions.

Scams on Airbnb: Warning Signs and Concrete Remedies

Fraudulent listings remain a real risk on any online booking platform. The European regulation 2024/1028 reduces this risk by requiring the verification of registration numbers, but some scams persist, particularly attempts to redirect payments off-platform.

Three signals should alert a traveler before confirming a reservation:

  • The host requests payment via bank transfer or through an external link, outside the Airbnb payment system.
  • The listing displays clearly professional photos for an abnormally low price compared to the local market.
  • The host’s profile has no verifiable reviews, and responses to questions remain vague or generic.

Any transaction made outside of Airbnb nullifies AirCover protections. The platform’s integrated payment system is the only guarantee of recourse in case of a dispute. Reporting a suspicious listing via the dedicated tool also helps protect future travelers.

In the event of a dispute not resolved by Airbnb’s resolution center, travelers residing in the European Union can access the European Commission’s online dispute resolution platform, a remedy often overlooked but effective for cross-border transactions.

The combination of the European regulatory framework, the AirCover mechanism, and personal travel insurance forms a three-tier safety net. None of these mechanisms work alone for all scenarios. Verifying the listing’s registration number, reading recent reviews of the host, and keeping all communications on the platform remain the most effective actions for a stay without unpleasant surprises.
